Optical sapphire is a very hard material with a Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond, so specific processes and tools are required during the grinding and polishing process. Sapphire is widely used in optical windows, watch glasses, laser windows, and high-end electronic devices.
Electroplated diamond grinding wheel for sapphire
Electroplated diamond grinding wheel is suitable for rough grinding of sapphire and is suitable for low-speed grinding equipment. High grinding efficiency, large excess removal, no need for dressing. We have customers who use electroplated diamond grinding wheels to grind sapphire hand-held watch glasses.
Resin diamond grinding wheel /Resin diamond pellets for sapphire
The resin bond has a certain elasticity, which can effectively absorb vibration during the grinding process and reduce material deformation or damage caused by heat accumulation. Therefore, resin diamond grinding wheels and resin diamond pellets are often used for fine grinding and polishing of sapphire. Compared with other types of grinding wheels, resin diamond grinding wheels can provide higher surface finish.
Metal diamond grinding wheel /Metal diamond pellets for sapphire
Metal diamond grinding wheels have high cutting efficiency and high temperature resistance, and are suitable for rough machining of sapphire and removal of large amounts of material, but the surface roughness is relatively high, and they are mainly used for heavy-load grinding. Metal diamond pellets are more suitable for precision machining, can provide uniform grinding force, reduce thermal damage and improve surface finish, and are suitable for fine grinding and polishing of sapphire.
Vitrified diamond pellets for sapphire demo
Vitrified bond pellets have good self-sharpening and shape retention. They have high grinding efficiency and long grinding wheel life. Vitrified diamond pellets maintain long-term cutting ability in precision machining and polishing, which helps to improve the surface quality of sapphire. Overall, vitrified diamond pellets perform well in sapphire precision machining, ensuring stability and high surface finish.
Mechanical polishing of sapphire:
Use artificial diamond micro-powder grinding paste for polishing, but since the hardness of diamond is higher than that of sapphire, scratches may be generated on the surface of sapphire.
The polishing process is divided into three stages: micro-crushing layer removal stage, transition stage, and polishing surface formation stage.
Common grinding fluids include salad oil, mineral oil, a mixture of base oil and abrasives, and the abrasives mainly include diamond micro-powder, etc
Chemical polishing of sapphire:
Mainly use polishing fluids that have a corrosive effect on the workpiece material to chemically corrode and remove the material.
Common chemical polishing tips are to use H2SO4:H3PO3=3:1, temperature at 220℃, time for 15min, which is a good condition for corroding 0001 crystal surface sapphire substrate.
Chemical mechanical polishing of sapphire (CMP):
This is a technology that combines mechanical grinding and chemical corrosion. Through the grinding action of ultrafine particles and the chemical corrosion action of slurry, a smooth and flat plane is formed on the surface of the ground medium.
In the CMP process of sapphire, commonly used abrasives mainly include diamond, silica sol, cerium oxide and aluminum oxide, boron carbide, etc.
Moresuperhard provide diamond polishing compound and different lapping pad for polishing sapphire.
